The outline below represents a presentation given by Dr. A.A. Culbreth to the Memorial Health University Medical Center’s Generation One group in April, 2005.

HEALTH AND HEALTHCARE IN AMERICA TODAY
DR. A. ARCH CULBRETH

1.WHAT IS HEALTH?
a.Absence of disease?
b.Health is more - isn't it living - having all your organs, bones, muscles, tissues even your brain working properly and healthy in it's environment.

2.WHAT DAMAGES OUR HEALTHY LIVING?
a.Chemicals
1. toxins in our environment
2. pollution in the air from industry and cars
3. pollution in the water we drink - US Capital building
4. pollution in the food we eat - preservatives, artificial colors, antibiotics and hormones placed in the food we eat.
b.Lack of good nutrition.
1. As noted above there are chemicals often in our food and lack of proper nutrients in the soil.
2. We need to eat fruits and vegetables, lean proteins like chicken and turkey, stay away from trans fats and fried foods and overly processed foods. We need to stay away from sugar that leads to diabetes. It can be in soft drinks, iced tea, candy, desserts, etc.
c.Stress - emotional, mental
1. Family and personal relations
2. Job stress - financial stress
3. Stress about your health
4. Stress about relations with other people
5. Unforgiveness - hatred of others
d.Biomechanical structural imbalances caused by
1. stress can cause tension or tightness in the muscle nerves, ligaments and tendons

In America today with the stresses we are under virtually every adult should be checked by a doctor of chiropractic to see if you have misalignments and impingements in your spine and other joints much like we go to the dentist twice a year and to the MD for general check ups.


WHAT ARE DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC IN GEORGIA LICENSED TO DO?

1.Chiropractic means that separate and distinct branch of the healing arts who's science and art utilize the inherent recuperative powers of the body and the relationship between the musculoskeletal structures and functions of the body particularly the spinal column and nervous system in the restoration and maintenance of health. Chiropractic is a learned profession that teaches the relationship between structure and function in the human body is a significant health factor and that the relationships between the spinal column and the nervous system are most significant since the normal transmission and expression of nerve energy are essential to the restoration and maintenance of health.
Chiropractic means the adjustment of the articulations of the human body including ilium, sacrum and coccyx and the other joints of the body like elbows, shoulders, ankles, knees

2.Doctors of chiropractic in Georgia are licensed if they have the courses required to utilize electrical therapeutic modalities.

3.Doctors of chiropractic are licensed to sign health certificates and report to the proper health officers.

4.Doctors of chiropractic may recommend vitamins, minerals and food supplements for their patients' health.


The normal transmission and expression of nerve energy is essential to the restoration and maintenance of health.


HOW CAN CHIROPRACTIC HELP HEALTHY LIVING?

1.The principle of body dynamics. The Journal of American Health Policy stated in 1992 after studying 2 million users of chiropractic that they had a lower total healthcare cost and chiropractic reduced the use of both physician and hospital care.

2.The body is made to move unimpinged. Pinched nerves in the low back can cause the calf to atrophy. An arm in a cast will shrink up over a period of time. The first principle of body mechanics is that the body is made to move. HF Farfan, MD in his book Managing Low Back Pain states, "Aging and degenerative changes are not synonymous…. degenerative changes do not appear unless the joint has been damaged by trauma."

3.Simple: The best way to keep the body working well as you age is to keep it moving and moving properly unimpinged.

WHAT IS THE CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT?

1.Adjustments - realigning the spine, joints, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hips, knee, ankle, etc.

2.Utilizing therapies like traction, ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, hot fomentation, cold therapies. These are helpful to get the patient feeling better but the adjustment is what restores function and proper realignment and removes nerve interference.

3.Recommending nutrition.
a. We all need to eat well, vegetable, fruits, lean meat like chicken, turkey, fish, no trans fats, sugar out of the diet as far as candy, soft drinks, iced tea, etc.
